Baby Drake’s Story
Laurie Drake was so excited when, after her second trimester screening with her first child, she found out she was having a boy. Visions of blue danced in her head. But soon after, the doctor approached Laurie and her husband, Kiel, with a real concern. There was something wrong with her unborn child’s heart that happened at week four. And it could not have been prevented… just an unfortunate developmental occurrence that sometimes happens as babies continue to mature. They anticipated a smooth pregnancy, but what would happen when Baby Boy Drake was born. Initially, Laurie was excited about becoming a Mommy… about baby showers, breastfeeding and nurseries, but was derailed by the news that her son was suffering from a condition that affected five in every 100,000 children. “I've thought over and over... why us, why him? But deep down, I truly believe that he will survive this.”
Imagine a world without heart disease or stroke. Many say this is unattainable, considering heart disease kills more Americans than the next four leading causes of death combined. But this vision — for a world free of heart disease and stroke — drives the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association. Open Your Heart gives donors the opportunity to make a direct impact on the AHA’s mission by making a personal gift.
Your generosity enables the American Heart Association to fund groundbreaking research, develop guidelines to improve patient care and help people lower their risk factors for heart disease and stroke. As long as heart disease continues to be the nation’s No. 1 cause of death, the importance of our work will only grow. Please consider making a gift to Open Your Heart.
Together, we can change lives and saves lives!
